Ganesh Chathurthi or Vinayakar Chaturthi is celebrated in the month of Aaani, Shukla Paksha Chathurthi Thithi. Vinayakar Chathurthi is celebrated as birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. According to our hindu myth, It is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Shukla Paksha of Aavani month. Lord Ganesh is the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

The celebration of Vinayakar Chathurthi ends after 10 days on Ganesh Visarjan day. In this day, devotees immerse idol of Lord Ganesh which is worshipped for lost 10 days in water .

Vinayakar Chathurthi Pooja can be done during Madhyahana as it is believed that Lord Ganesh was born during Madhyahana Kaal. Madhyahana Kaal is equivalent to midday according to Hindu division of the day.

It is believed that one should not sight the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi. Sighting the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi creates Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank which means false accusation of stealing something. Depending on start and end time of Chaturthi Tithi, sighting of the moon might be prohibited for two consecutive days. Further, Moon risen during Chaturthi should not be sighted even if Chaturthi Tithi gets over before moonset.

This Year Vinayar Chathurthi will be celebrated on Friday, August 29th, 2014.
